Goal setting is a concept and practice we all use to transform our lives. Entrepreneurs, in particular, are naturally driven by goals as they steer their businesses in their desired direction. And since it’s a brand new year, a new or revamped set of goals is most likely in any organization’s agenda.

Based on the goal-setting theory and research by Dr. Edwin Locke and Dr. Gary Latham, setting clear, meaningful, and challenging goals are important. Using the S.M.A.R.T. technique or setting specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound goals also help in maximizing business goals.

But let’s focus on setting attainable goals. Here are simple and practical tips and techniques that you can follow for your business this year:

Evaluate and Define Your Goals

Take some time to reflect on and evaluate your current situation. Look at your accomplishments and assess your level of satisfaction and capabilities. At the same time, peer deep within your heart and determine what you want to achieve or where you want to go. By evaluating and defining your goals, it will be easier for you to attain them.

Write Them Down

Writing or recording your goals down increases your chances of achieving them. A Harvard Business study supports this theory.  Doing this makes your goal real and tangible and the medium you use serves as a visual reminder of the goals you want to achieve. You can also include there the list of things that you can delegate to other team members, like your virtual assistant, so you can achieve your goals easier and faster.

Use Goal Setting Tools

A planner/journal or a whiteboard is a classic goal-setting tool. But thanks to today’s technologically-driven world, we can now also access helpful online goal-setting tools if we wish to use them. There are worksheets/spreadsheets, software, and mobile apps that can easily be downloaded for free or for a small fee.

Embrace The Small Goals

You probably have that one big goal for your business this year. But while applying different measures to achieve that, don’t forget to acknowledge or cherish the small accomplishments you’ve gained along the way. These small goal wins can motivate you and your team to move forward to succeed.

Create Accountability

Let other people know about your goals. A goal becomes more powerful if there’s somebody who can hold you accountable to it. By having accountability partners and supporters – whether family, friends, or colleagues, it will be easier for you to attain your goals.

Make this year a better year for your business. Set attainable goals using the tips we’ve discussed and boost your odds of success!

This article is a big help especially for those people who are not able to focus on their goals on the previous year. As working individuals, we have certain tasks that we need to complete but only given few hours to do so. Instead of complaining and nagging about negatives, we can use this tips to help us divert our attention into much better tasks.

I agree with the the first four tips on how to set your goals. Evaluating and defining your goals, writing them down, use goal setting tools and embracing small goals are effective. But the last which is creating accountability is not working for me, maybe it works for some people. I tried to share my goals with my family and friends before because I think that I can achieve my goals with their help and by motivating me. But it goes other way, I didn’t get any help from them and they demotivate me by saying I can’t do it and it only leads me to depression. I think we can still achieve our goals with ourselves and not telling others our next moves.

I find writing my goals to be a good way at reminding me of where I want to be and what I want to do. I tried goal-setting apps and spreadsheets, but it doesn’t work for me, is there any app/application that you can recommend?
